What Kind of Grease for Sewing Machine Gears

by Joseph Nichols | Last Updated July 3, 2022

Do you hear the machine parts moaning each time you try to sew? It shows your sewing machine gears are thirsty and require lubrication with suitable grease.

Machine parts get dry and obscured with lint and dust, causing friction and deterioration of machine components. Lubrication of machine gears improves the performance of the sewing machines and ensures that they will last longer. Moreover, it prevents rusting and wearing out the machine’s metallic parts.

So many different types of grease are available on the market for lubrication purposes. But you can’t rely on any type of grease. You should be careful when selecting grease for your sewing machine gears. If you want to get rid of such annoying noises coming from machine gears, you need to grease them immediately.

Before greasing your sewing machine gears, you need to consider following instructions

Choose a grease that is low-viscous or has a water-like consistency.

Use a reliable way for the grease application, such as any nozzle to oil hard-to-reach spots so that the gear’s performance and effectiveness can be retained.

Oil/grease used to lubricate machine parts must be odorless, colorless, and mineral oil. Moreover, it should be stainless as it is inevitable that lubricant gets in contact with your garments and textiles.

Ensure the grease you use has a low melting point so that it can melt under low heat to serve its lubricating purpose.

If you observe any change or distinction in color or odor of grease, DO NOT USE it as grease breaks down over time and may cause other issues.

Use only specific oil/grease made for sewing machines. Avoid using cooking oil, automotive oil, or 3 in-1 oil as such oil can clog the machine gears and may damage the fabric.

What Kind of Grease for Sewing Machine Gears?

Here are some of the specialized types of grease used for sewing machines.

Super Lube

Super lube is a general-purpose lubricant that is best for greasing your sewing machine parts. Super lube greases are waterproof and dielectric. Due to its thicker viscosity as compared to other oils, it lasts longer and sews quietly if regularly applied.

Tri-flow sewing machine grease

For deep penetration into hard-to-reach areas of your sewing machine, Tri-flow grease is the best option (if your machine is manually lubed). Due to its superiority, lubricating power, and light viscosity, it is suggested to use it for most sewing, embroidery, and overlock machines.

Goldstar Sewing Machine grease/oil

Goldstar sewing machine is a water-white lubricating oil with low viscosity used in sewing machine gears. It is the best option to use when there is a chance that oil may come in contact with the fabrics. It is preferred for use by mechanics and technicians.

Singer Sewing Machine grease/Oil

Singer sewing machine oil is colorless and odorless mineral oil. Due to its light viscosity, it doesn’t get accumulated on machine gears. It is essential to use in sewing machines where metal parts come in contact with one another to prevent wear and rust. One of the best things about singer oil is it’s not limited to sewing machine lubrication only instead you can use it for all kinds of lubrication.

Zoom Sprout Sewing Machine grease/Oil

Zoom sprout oil is a non-toxic, non-staining, and non-gumming oil that keeps your sewing machine gears in the best working condition. Oil can be poured even into hard-to-reach areas of your sewing machine with its spout, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and veterans.

Sew Rite

This product is specifically designed to prevent stains from setting in. Due to its remarkable lubrication properties, it is an ideal choice for embroidery machines.

Conclusion

It is recommended to lubricate your sewing machine gears every after 50 hours of use to maintain its durability and efficiency. Greasing the gears of the sewing machine in routine will prolong your machine’s life and keep the machine parts running smoothly. But be very particular about selecting the type of grease for your sewing machine accordingly.
