Is it really possible to embroider on a regular sewing machine?
Well, the fact is that it’s a common myth in the sewing world that it is important to have a big fancy embroidery machine to deal with the basic embroidery.
As embroidery sewing machines are quite expensive, not everyone has the luxury of owning them.
But people who are lovers of embroidery but only have the normal sewing machine do not need to despair.
Fortunately, you can still do beautiful and wonderful work with practice with your simple home sewing machine.
Embroidery is just a nice thing to add to any sewing project in order to add a little bit extra beyond whatever it is that you are looking forward to making.
So, let’s learn about how you can embroider on a regular sewing machine.
Supplies required for embroidery on a sewing machine
Design and Water-soluble stabilizer
The first obvious thing that you need to do embroidery is design.
Water-soluble stabilizer: It’s considered great for transferring a design and making some smooth stitches that you can wash out, in the end, makes for stitches that would not get damaged by pulling away from the excess stabilizer.
As it happens in a lot of tear-away stabilizers.
Uncut fabric or Line permanent marker
Plus, you also need a fine line permanent marker in order to trace your design.
Secondly, you also need to have uncut fabric: the thing is that it’s just like a game here, and you can even make use of this technique to make ready-to-wear items look more attractive.
Thread and Glue Stick
You would also need to have a thread of your choice.
While choosing the thread, contrast is key.
It is recommended to practice on some scraps if possible in order to help you make a good decision.
One of the most simple but important supplies in embroidery work is a glue stick for gently securing the stabilizer to your work area.
Some important materials
Make sure you have some essential materials with you while embroidering with a sewing machine.
Arrange these things: Pressing iron, cotton fabric, embroidery design, embroidery hoop, fabric marker, free-motion foot, embroidery backing, fine point embroidery, scissors, matching needle and thread, sewing machine, and pressing iron.
Embroider with a sewing machine in simple and easy steps
Hopefully, you would have already chosen the design you want to embroider with a sewing machine.
Just start by transferring the design onto the right side of the fabric. Also, add the backing as mentioned on the package. Ensure that the backing covers the entire design.
Step 1
Carefully place the fabric in the embroidery hoop.
Set up your hoop in this order: fabric wrong side up, inner hoop, and then outer hoop.
While embroidering on a sewing machine, make sure that the right side of the fabric is inside the hoop.
It is important to set the hoop aside while setting up the sewing machine.
The design should be in the center of the hoop with ample room for sewing inside the hoop.
In case if your design is larger than the hoop, it would be better to work in small sections.
Remove the fabric once a section is completed, and also properly set the hoop in a different section.
Step 2
Now, you need to remove the old presser foot and needle too in order to achieve the freedom to work.
Follow the instructions for your particular foot and sewing machine to install the free motion foot.
If removed above, don’t forget to return the needle to its position and thread it.
Then, find a switch or button on your sewing machine that enables you to push the feed dogs down.
It is considered more appropriate to install a darning plate for my Singer machine which functions as an intermediary between the feed dogs and the fabric to make sure that the feed dogs never touch the fabric.
It is recommended to do it before installing the free motion foot, threading, and inserting the needle.
Also, test the length and width of a piece of fabric in order to keep your machine on a straight stitch.
Step 3
Hold the presser foot handle and firmly lift and then just firmly slide the embroidery hoop under the needle, keeping the right side of the fabric up.
The fabric needs to touch the plate with the wrong side so the hoop must be set.
First, decide where you plan to start stitching.
Now, just lower the foot and at the same time lower the needle a little using the sewing machine wheel to the point where it catches the bobbin thread.
Do not stop spinning the wheel until the needle is up the fabric.
Make use of scissors to push the thread away from the needle in order to make sure that the thread is under not above the presser foot.
Step 4
Now it’s time to give your work a final touch, so if you were using any sort of tear away backing, make sure that you remove it at this point.
Pick up a fine scissor and remove all extra threads. Last, just press the fabric on the opposite side, with the iron on steam and that’s it you’re done.
